Substitute
Substitute Teachers & Child Nutrition Workers
Thank you for your interest in becoming a substitute teacher or child nutrition substitute worker with Halifax County Schools! You must have at least a high school diploma or equivalent to be employed in any position in Halifax County.
The first step to becoming a substitute teacher is to complete the Effective Teacher Training Class. The course, along with our Substitute Orientation can be taken on-line through App Garden University. If you have already completed the course from a North Carolina Community Colleges across you can can still access the Orientation Course. Once you have completed the courses, you must complete an online application and the paperwork links below to the Human Resource Department.
If you already have an active North Carolina Teaching License, you do not have to complete the course.

- Health Examination Certificate - Form must be completed by a physician.
- I-9 - Complete Section 1: Employee Information Verification
- Direct Deposit - Must attach a voided check at the bottom of the form or have a letter from your bank with the router number and checking or saving's account number.

Salaries and Benefits
Employees receive the State of North Carolina benefits and additional benefits through the Halifax County School system.
- Permanent employees are hired with the expectation of permanent employment to fill a position that is to be permanent if present needs and funds continue.
- Full-time employees are those whose regular work week is the number of hours set as full-time in his or her class of work, but not less than 30 hours per week.
- Part-time employees regularly work at least 20 hours per week, but less than the number of hours set as full time for that class of work.

Health insurance benefits are provided by the State of North Carolina Teachers' and State Employees' Comprehensive Major Medical Plan for full-time permanent employees. Dependent coverage is available.

Retirement Benefits
Full-time permanent employees participate in the State of North Carolina Retirement System. Both the employee and the state contribute to the fund. Employees are vested in the retirement system after 5 years.

North Carolina - NC 401(k) Plan
Actively contributing members of the Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System are eligible to contribute to the NC 401(k) Plan through Prudential. A 401(k) plan is an employer-sponsored retirement savings program with special tax advantages that allows employees to invest up to 20% of their income for retirement on a tax deferred basis.

Leave Options
Halifax County Schools offers a variety of leave options to support the personal and professional needs of our employees. From annual and sick leave to family, medical, and specialized leave programs, our goal is to ensure staff have the flexibility and resources necessary to navigate life’s circumstances. Employees are encouraged to review the Leave Process Map for a clear outline of steps and procedures
Short Term Disability
Short-Term Disability provides income protection for eligible employees who are unable to work due to a non-work-related illness, injury, or medical condition. This benefit helps ensure financial stability during periods when you need time away from work to recover.
Eligible employees receive a monthly short-term benefit after a waiting period of 60 continuous calendar days.
Long Term Disability
Long-Term Disability provides financial protection for eligible employees who are unable to work for an extended period due to a serious illness, injury, or medical condition. This benefit offers continued income support beyond the short-term disability period, helping employees maintain stability while focusing on recovery.
Long-Term Disability is provided for permanent employees who meet certain state service requirements. LTD payments are payable after the conclusion of the STD period. Employees approved for LTD benefits must terminate employment as a permanent employee prior to receiving LTD benefits.
Sick Leave
Sick Leave provides employees with paid time off when they are unable to work due to personal illness, injury or medical appointments. Halifax County Schools is committed to supporting the health and well-being of all staff, and sick leave helps ensure employees can take the necessary time to recover without financial strain.
Family and Medical Leave (FMLA)
Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) provides eligible employees with job-protected leave for qualifying family or medical situations, including personal health conditions, the birth or adoption of a child, or care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition. Halifax County Schools is committed to ensuring employees have the support and flexibility needed during significant life events.
Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows eligible employees to take up to 12 work weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave for their own serious medical condition or that of an immediate family member.
Worker's Compensation
Halifax County Schools is committed to maintaining a safe and supportive workplace. If an employee is injured on the job, our Workers’ Compensation program provides benefits to cover medical care and wage replacement during recovery. Beginning August 1, 2015, new and existing professional educators will be able to apply for and update their North Carolina licenses online. Instructions and more information are available within the online licensure system.
Information about the school system and the community as well as salary and benefit information
Link only works if you check them from a school computer. Please note that the requirements to renew your Standard Professional II License changed effective June 30, 2016. You must have a total of 8 CEU's to renew. K-8 teachers must have 3 in Literacy, 3 in Content Area and 2 General. All other educators must have 3 in Content and 5 General. and out of the 8, 3 must be in literacy and 3 directly related to the area you teach.

The North Carolina General Assembly has enacted Session Law 2025-73 (Senate Bill 375), which includes new requirements for local boards of education regarding the publication of total compensation and position information for central office employees.
Halifax County Schools is committed to complying with all state requirements and providing transparent access to information as required by law. State Salary Schedule
The North Carolina State Salary Schedules establish the minimum compensation for eligible public school employees whose positions are funded by the State. These schedules are approved by the North Carolina General Assembly and are administered through the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Salary placement is determined by factors such as position, years of experience, licensure, and education level.
