Mr. J.J. Garner is a graduate of Shaw University with a degree in Music Performance. He served in Shaw University's band program as an Arranger, Drill Coordinator, Pep Band Director, Drum Major Instructor, and Brasswind Coordinator. He has worked in various counties as a summer camp clinician and advisor for high school marching bands.

He has also revived several band programs. The most recent school is William R. Davie Middle STEM Academy, where he served as Director of Bands. He currently serves Northwest Collegiate & Technical Academy in the same capacity.

Mr. Garner is a proud product of Halifax County Schools and participated in the band programs at the then Northwest Halifax High School as a Section Leader, Band Captain, and First Chair Trumpet under the tutelage of the late great Mr. Teicher L. Patterson.
