• Title 1: Teacher Assistants

    Overview:

    Halifax County Schools' elementary teacher assistants serve as instructional assistants under the supervision of the Principal. The Principal assigns teacher assistants to classrooms that demonstrate high need with regard to classroom numbers, classroom data, and available funding. The teacher assistant (instructional assistant) assists a certificated teacher in reinforcing instruction in whole/small groups or with individual students in a classroom setting. They assist in the preparation of instructional materials and implementation of lesson plans; provide routine clerical support, and perform related work as required.

    Their primary role and responsibilities are: 

    • Assisting with the development and presentation of learning materials and instructional exercises;
    • Tutoring individuals or small groups of students;
    • Reinforcing instruction as directed by the teacher;
    • monitoring and overseeing student drills, practices, and assignments in various subjects;
    • conferring with the classroom teacher concerning lesson plans and materials to meet student needs;
    • Assisting with the implementation of lesson plans;
    • Performing a variety of clerical duties in support of classroom activities: such as attendance, duplicating, and filing instructional materials; maintaining student records, and grading student assignments and tests as assigned; 
    • Assisting students in completing classroom assignments, homework, and projects;
    • Ensuring student understanding of classroom rules and procedures;
    • Assisting students by answering questions, providing proper examples, emotional support, friendly attitude, and general guidance. 
    • Observes and manages the behavior of students in the classroom, lunch areas, playground, or other learning environments according to approved procedures; monitors students during outdoor activities as directed; reports progress regarding student performance and behavior;
    • Administering and scoring various tests and assessments as directed; preparing reports and documentation as required;
    • Operating classroom audio-visual equipment, computer, and assigned digital paths;  
    • Supporting classroom set-up, work areas, bulletin boards & displays, distributing and collecting papers, supplies, and materials; 
    • Assures the health and safety of students by following established practices and procedures; maintains the learning environment in a safe, orderly, and clean manner;
    • Supporting non-English speaking students & parents, school personnel, and students during phone calls, parent conferences, meetings, and assemblies as directed;
    • Attending meetings and in-service trainings as assigned;
    • Maintaining discipline in the absence of the teacher.
