It is hard to believe that we have only 19 days remaining in the 2021-2022 school year. What a year it has been! This year would not have been possible without the incredible cooperation from our staff, our students, and of course, our families. Thank you for your outstanding commitment and dedication to Halifax County Schools.
May is a busy month for celebrations and special observances in Halifax County Schools. This week, May 2nd- May 6th, we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week. Now, more than ever, we say "thank you" to our teachers. May is also Mental Health Awareness Month. Our teams of school social workers and counselors are dedicated professionals who offer our students and families a variety of programs and resources to support their emotional health and well-being. This month's other notable observances include National School Lunch Hero Day on May 6th. We are thankful for our School Nutrition staff. Additionally, we also will celebrate National School Nurse Day on May 11th.
We will close out the 2021-2022 academic year in just a few short weeks, but there is much to do before we get to the last day of school on May 27th. This week, we will celebrate our Principal, Teacher, and Beginning Teachers of the year on May 5th. Additionally, students are preparing to take year-end exams. Schools are planning for end-of-year activities like field days, awards programs, and other year-end celebrations. Our high schools are also busy planning events and experiences to celebrate the Class of 2022, which leads to graduation.
At this point in the school year, it is a good time for us all to stop and reflect on the challenges and successes we have experienced. While the challenges have been many, we have also learned how resilient and compassionate our Halifax County Schools community is. Due to the pandemic, our students lost over 100,000 instructional minutes and there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. We have forged new friendships and partnerships, and we have learned that there is not anything we cannot accomplish if we stay united in our focus on students.
