BOY/MOY/EOY Walkthroughs
Overview:
The Superintendent conducts scheduled district walkthroughs throughout the year with the Curriculum, Instruction, & Accountability Team. The learning walks are facilitated by the BOY, MOY, & EOY walkthrough forms with an emphasis on growing student achievement. K-12 principals and classroom teachers are provided access to the district's walkthrough forms at the beginning of the school year. Prior to the school visit, the form is reshared to ensure alignment of "look fors" in the classroom. Instructional leaders are required to use the walkthrough form to prep classrooms for scheduled district learning walks. However, schools may use additional tools to focus their data collection and feedback as needed in varied classrooms.
Purpose: To align and progress-monitor teaching and learning in elementary and secondary classrooms during the beginning of the year, middle of the year, and end of the year; gather comprehensive instructional data, and provide scripted feedback to key stakeholders to inform them about teaching & learning strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats prior to EOY student outcomes.
The Process:
- The BOY, MOY, and EOY district walkthrough dates are announced and the relevant form is shared accordingly.
- The Curriculum, Instruction, & Accountability Team reports to the front office upon arrival at the school and begins classroom walks using the district's identified walkthrough form (electronic or paper copy).
- The Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent meet with the principal for a comprehensive school update and overview of the school's benchmark data.
- The classroom snapshots are noted and reported out in whole-group to triangulate the principal's school update.
- The principal is given the opportunity to confirm or acknowledge outcomes and inquire about next. steps.
- The Assistant Superintendent sends the school a final feedback report within 3-5 business days that highlights the school's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
- The Principal is encouraged to share the walkthrough feedback with the school staff and respond to any suggested recommendations within the timeframe noted.
Walkthrough feedback assists instructional leaders in recognizing trends of strengths and weaknesses across content areas and grade levels. The collected data inform the allocation of resources and professional development opportunities. Scheduled walkthroughs help build both mentoring and teaching capacity between mentors & mentees, administrators & teachers, and teachers and students. When used effectively, classroom walkthroughs provide the necessary snapshots for quick wins and long-range planning to meet targets. District walkthroughs are collaborative learning walks that occur in real-time. The frequent learning walks have high-yielding benefits. They are known to have a positive effect on instructional leaders, both high and low-performing classrooms, and overall student achievement.
